Band 5 - Staff Nurse – Renal – Open Day

We are excited to be hosting an Open day for nurses considering a career in the Renal speciality.

Imperial College Renal and Transplant Centre based at Hammersmith Hospital is the largest facility in Western Europe for nephrology, dialysis and transplantation, offering unrivalled patient care. Our ultimate goal is to provide clinical excellence and to work as a team in our endeavor to achieve the best possible care for our patients.

Our kidney and transplant service is a regional renal (kidney) and transplant medicine centre, looking after over 3500 patients on renal replacement therapy and performing an average of 170 kidney transplants a year.

The West London Renal and Transplant Centre consists of:

  • Acute haemodialysis unit
  • 12 bedded high dependency unit (HDU) on De Wardener ward
  • 3 inpatient Renal wards  - Handfield Jones, Kerr  & Peters Wards
  • 18 bedded Programmed Investigation Unit - Pam Sassoa Unit
  • Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Unit and Home Therapies
  • Rapid Assessment Unit
  • Renal Outpatients Departments

We provide clinical expertise in renal care for adult renal patients in all stages of their illness from Acute Kidney Injury to patients with Established Renal Failure requiring different forms of renal replacement therapies such as Peritoneal Dialysis, Haemodialysis and Transplantation.

You will experience in-depth training to develop or extend your skills in the management and care of Renal patients. These include:

  • Care of patients with Acute Kidney Injury
  • Care of patients with Established Renal Failure
  • Care of patients undergoing Haemodialysis
  • Care of patients undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis
  • Care of patient undergoing Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation
  • Care of patient requiring Conservative and End of Life care
  • Care of Renal patients with other related problems such as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, diabetes, and vascular complications
  • Pre and post Renal investigations care

There are 8 Satellite haemodialysis units across West London, North West London and West Hertfordshire looking after over 1500 patients on maintenance haemodialysis:


  • Hayes Dialysis Unit
  • Brent Dialysis Unit, Central Middlesex Hospital
  • Ealing Dialysis Unit, Ealing Hospital
  • Northwick Park Dialysis Unit, Northwick Park Hospital
  • West Middlesex Hospital Dialysis Unit, West Middlesex Hospital
  • Charles Renal Centre, St. Charles Hospital
  • 1 South Dialysis Unit, Charing Cross Hospital
  • Watford Dialysis Unit, Watford General Hospital

As a nurse with us, you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and  clinical expertise in a supportive environment. We are committed to CPD and there are many educational and training opportunities to help build your career in Renal Nursing. There is a dedicated Renal Education team to help provide you with the education and   clinical support you require. The structured teaching programmes are;

  • Preceptorship Programme for newly qualified nurses by the Trust Nursing Directorate
  • In-service renal study days
  • Clinical teaching sessions
  • University Accredited Degree and Masters Level Renal Course
  • Attend national and international conferences

Previous experience in a Renal setting is not a requirement. We welcome applications from those working in other acute specialties and from newly qualified nurses or those seeking part-time employment.  On appointment you will join our world-leading Renal and Transplant Centre of excellence for service, research and training.
