This is an exciting time to join us. The three NHS trusts that currently run Broomfield, Southend and Basildon hospitals are planning to become a new single NHS organisation by mid-2019.

 All three hospitals will continue to provide the services our patients use the most. These include outpatient appointments, children’s services and day-case surgery.  All three hospitals will continue to provide 24/7 A&E and maternity services.

Using the same equipment, processes and IT systems means services will run more smoothly.  Single leadership, standards and new structures will speed up decision making.  Combined corporate services will reduce duplication and cut running costs. This means more money for front-line services and faster improvements.

Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a Teaching Hospital, linked to the London University, is the Cancer Centre for South Essex and serves a population of 338,800. We currently employ about 4,500 staff with 190 Consultant staff.

The Trust is located in Essex close to London and many areas of outstanding natural beauty. The University of Essex has a major campus in Southend and local secondary schools are ranked high in national league tables. Southend on Sea is a vibrant seaside town with a thriving sailing community. It has a busy local airport offering access to many European destinations, e.g. Barcelona, Berlin, Venice, Amsterdam, etc. There are good rail links to London with commuting time of about 45 minutes.

The department provides a comprehensive surgical pathology service, including diagnostic cytopathology, an autopsy service, breast and cervical screening services for South Essex. The current workload is in the order of 21,000 requests per annum. A wide and interesting range of biopsy material is submitted for examination, a substantial proportion of which is diagnostic work for the Trust's Cancer Centre. There is a well-developed immunohistochemistry service to support the diagnostic process, which is responsive to increasing demands from the Clinical Oncologists.

Applications on the basis of a NHS locum position from candidates in the process of achieving specialist registration will also be considered.

Job Requirements

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
