Consultant in Emergency Medicine

A recruitment incentive of £25,000 applies to this position, payable on commencement of the post.

Emergency medicine is a varied, exciting, unpredictable and challenging specialty and these are some of the reasons that many of us chose the field that we did. The current demands on the NHS are high and no where is this felt more acutely than in an Emergency Department. We invite applicants for Consultants in Emergency Medicine (substantive and locum posts available) to join a team of staff that make facing these challenges enjoyable and worthwhile! The CQC visit in 2019 rated us 'Good' and highlighted certain areas as 'Outstanding'!

Stoke Mandeville Hospital is one of 2 acute sites that make up Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust and is where our Emergency Department is based. The Trust has recently invested in redevelopment of the 'front door' and there are exciting plans to come, including the development of an Urgent Treatment Centre with our Lead GP. We are expanding our emergency care workforce - at present we comprise over 20 'junior tier' doctors (FY2, TJD and CTs), 14 'middle tier' (comprising SAS, HSTs, CESR and CF roles) and 8 consultants (7.4 WTE). We also have the support of ACPs and a Consultant Nurse.

We do pride ourselves on our educational commitment and our most recent GMC survey has been favourable. We sit in the Thames Valley Deanery and have close ties with other hospitals in the region. Our Trust is affiliated with University of Oxford and our Emergency Department will be receiving students from the University of Buckinghamshire from this year. The Trust hosts ALS and EPLS and ATLS and Ultrasound courses with current Consultants being Course Directors and instructing on all courses.

We provide 14 hours shop-floor cover every weekday and 14.5 hrs cover over weekend. The current Consultants work a 10 PA job plan which includes 2.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities. 7 PA DCC and 0.5 PA non DCC. 1 PA for 10 hours on-call. Our weekend commitment is currently 1 in 6. There will be opportunities to work more PAs as per the candidate's requirement. An annualised rota and an understanding cohort of colleagues allows us to accommodate the request to balance the intensity of clinical shifts with time to enjoy and focus on other aspects of life.

We strongly encourage people to develop sub speciality interest according to their personal interests and expertise, as well as the needs of the department. We are particularly interested in EM consultants with dual accreditation in PEM and ICU. We have a consultant who works in the pre-hospital and HEMS setting and would welcome more. There are opportunities to be involved in developing courses, FOAMED material, research, simulation and improving care pathways.

Stoke Mandeville Hospital sits in Aylesbury, which was designated a Garden Town in 2017. The beautiful surrounds of the Chilterns allow those with an appreciation of the outdoors many opportunities. London is under an hour by train, as well as transport links to Oxford and Milton Keynes. Within our department, we encourage team building in- and out of the workplace. We have hosted 'World Food Day' events, the usual summer picnic and Christmas parties and participated in several obstacle runs!

If curious, get in touch and come and visit!

The posts would equally suit new or established Consultants.
