Job Description

The UK Atomic Energy Authority have an excellent opportunity for a cost reduction engineer to join the newly created cost reduction taskforce on our cutting-edge reactor design programme. With a clear objective to bring forward one of the world's first commercially viable fusion reactors, cost reduction is a vital strand of this industry-leading programme.

The cost reduction task force sits within the "Commercial and Programme Development" team, with significant cross-cutting interface with the 7 primary design units. This role will report to the STEP Cost Model Technical Lead, who will be responsible for facilitating the cost reduction engineers to have access, engagement and interface across the technical design team. The Cost Model Technical Lead will furthermore align the work of the cost modelling team with the cost reduction task force. The cost model and reduction areas are ultimately accountable to the Head of Commercial and Programme Development - who works to the STEP Programme Director.

An overall cost modelling strategy is in place, focused on application of top-down cost modelling, bottom-up cost modelling; industrial verification. The key responsibilities of the cost reduction task force are:
- To use the cost models and other relevant tools to act as a cost reduction business partner to the respective 7 primary design units
- To quickly get a top-level understanding of the relevant subject matter of the partnered design units
- To instil a cost reduction conscience into the wider programme,
- To participate in design review meetings as required and support design activities with cost drivers in mind, but without jeopardising functional/regulatory or other requirements of components
- Lead the active cost reduction strategy and implement appropriate meetings, tools and processes to achieve a cost optimised product taking into account the relevant uncertainties in cost data and the corresponding level of the conceptual design
- Identify and protect intellectual property across all costing activities
- Defining and implementing the working level cost reduction programme - including identifying those areas of greatest opportunity together with the cost modelling team
- Ensure robust and rigorous documentation of cost reduction efforts using succinct, programme relevant and highly credible costing reports (cost notes), ensuring all cost notes are passed through the costing due diligence process soliciting the review and approval of Subject Matter Experts
- Launch and manage external procurement related to costing group when required
Essential Aptitudes and Experience
