Salary: £52,000 - £60,000 per annum
Location: Cheadle, Stockport - but with regular travel to other sites across the UK as needed and occasional international travel (with an expectation of significant home working during the current pandemic and with availability of flexible working post-pandemic)
We have an exciting new opportunity to join the UK Biobank as our Head of Research Development.
UK Biobank is a large-scale biomedical database and research resource containing genetic, lifestyle and health information from half a million UK participants.
UK Biobank’s database, which includes blood samples, heart and brain scans and genetic data of the 500,000 volunteer participants, is globally accessible to approved researchers who are undertaking health-related research that’s in the public interest.
UK Biobank recruited 500,000 people aged between 40-69 years in (Apply online only) from across the UK. With their consent, they provided detailed information about their lifestyle, physical measures and had blood, urine and saliva sample collected and stored for future analysis.
UK Biobank’s research resource is a major contributor in the advancement of modern medicine and treatment, enabling better understanding of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of serious and life-threatening illnesses – including cancer, heart diseases and stroke.
UK Biobank is generously supported by its founding funders the Wellcome Trust and UK Medical Research Council, as well as the Department of Health, Scottish Government, the Northwest Regional Development Agency, British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK. The organisation has over 150 dedicated members of staff, based in multiple locations across the UK.
Head of Research Development - The Role:
This role is an exciting opportunity to apply your skills and experience to a world-class international health resource. It will suit someone who thrives on the challenge of attracting and shaping opportunities to enhance the resource and its impact, combining cutting edge technology and innovation with global industry investment.
This is a high-profile appointment, with a significant outward facing role in developing opportunities for investment and maintaining key relationships with commercial and academic researchers worldwide. You will develop long-term strategies based on trends in life sciences research and technology, and the application of data science to health, as well as governmental and commercial funding priorities.
You will be responsible for the inception of high-profile, complex projects (for example, where a consortium of funders wish to enhance the resource by assaying biological samples) that result from these relationships and strategies. Internally, you will be a member of our Senior Management Team and have responsibility for the Access Department, who are responsible for researcher liaison.
Head of Research Development – You:
You will need to have a relevant masters degree in a life sciences, data sciences or other health-related discipline, combined with experience of research, commercial acumen and project management experience. You will also need excellent communication and negotiation skills and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
The role will be based in Cheadle, Greater Manchester but with regular travel to other sites across the UK and occasional international travel. During the current pandemic there is an expectation of significant home working and when this abates, flexible working will be available.
