Will you join us on this journey? Here’s more about the role and what we are looking for.
Locum Consultant Cardiologist -
PCI Interventionist fixed term starting on 4 November 2019 for 6 months in the first instance
Based in a Tertiary Centre
Heart & Lung Centre,
The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is one of the largest acute Trusts in the West Midlands. The purpose-built Heart and Lung Centre, which opened in October 2004, is one of four tertiary Cardiothoracic Units in the region.
We have an established TAVI programme, performing approximately 130 cases per year and are looking for an experienced independent operator to join our TAVI team for a fixed term of 1 year whilst a senior colleague is on sabbatical. The successful candidate will also be part of our 24/7 tertiary primary angioplasty service for patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) for the population of Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, parts of Staffordshire, Shropshire and North Wales.
The PCI team is made up of a total of 9 intervenionists, of which you would be one, and includes 4 colleagues from neighbouring Trusts. There will be a total of 13 cardiology consultants based at New Cross Hospital with one week in 13 spent as the consultant on-call for the cardiology ward. The on-call ratios should change to 1:10 for PPCI and 1:14 for the ward week as we are also looking to recruit a substantive cardiology interventionist at this time.
We have a skilled Cardiac Assessment Team who in liaison with the consultant on-call ensure that our NSTEMI pathway works in line with best practice so that patients are transferred from our feeder hospitals in a timely manner.
The Heart and Lung Centre delivers approximately 1,000 adult cardiac surgical cases, 500 thoracic surgical cases, 1,400 PCIs and 1,300 diagnostic angiograms per year. We have a large device implant programme and our very successful electrophysiology service has expanded and includes visiting consultants. Our facilities comprise three Catheter Laboratories and a dedicated Pacing Room supported by a radial lounge of 6 chairs; 12-bed Day Ward; 37-bed Cardiology Ward and 31-bed surgical ward with 14-bed ICCU and 3 dedicated cardiothoracic theatres.
The department has an active research programme; the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to existing trials and will be supported in developing their own research projects where appropriate.
