Job Description

Summary of Job Purpose:

To provide and supervise the delivery of high standards of nursing care to Resident’s in accordance with current evidence-based professional practice and within company policies, Care Quality Commission standards and regulations, and current legislation.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Care Standards and Quality Assurance

  • Protect all Residents from abuse and report any concerns as per Company Policies and Procedures
  • Visit each Resident during the night, to assess their needs. Supervise all care activities and continually seek to improve care delivered to Residents
  • Report any observed change in the condition of a Resident, any critical incident or accident (Staff or Resident) or any other relevant event to the Deputy Home Manager without delay, providing an accurate Care Plan to rectify the situation
  • Complete HMForm-30 Accident and Incident Report Form. as appropriate
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care in conjunction with the Resident and their family to meet their holistic needs
  • Promote positive risk taking by Residents as an essential part of everyday life, assisting them to maximise their abilities and promote their independence
  • Make sure that the management of medication is compliant with Company policy and regulatory requirements and NMC guidance. Make sure that medical stock and nursing supplies are replenished in a timely manner and maintained as economically as possible
  • Value the life experience and knowledge of Resident’s, showing them courtesy and respect, observing their privacy and protecting their dignity at all times
  • Respect each Resident as an individual, treating them equally and valuing their cultural and social diversity
  • Work in partnership with Residents ensuring that their views, choices and interests are at the centre of all care and services provided by the home.

Job Requirements

Customer Care

  • Maintain appropriate working relationships with GPs and all external regulatory bodies. Manage in conjunction with Deputy Home Manager all internal and external inspections/audits
  • Communicate effectively with Resident’s, their relatives, friends, other staff and external visitors to the Home and deal sensitively with their concerns
  • Manage complaints, critical incidents, accidents or outbreaks of infection appropriately recording and reporting as necessary to the Home Manager using HMForm-30 Accident and Incident Report Form.
  • Greet all visitors, and answer the telephone, in a friendly, courteous and efficient manner and promote Porthaven Care Homes and your own Home in particular, positively at all times in the local community
  • Make sure that professional knowledge and job skills are up to date so that our Residents receive the appropriate care and service

People Management

  • Provide effective and efficient management of care staff in conjunction with the Deputy Manager and Home Manager and other supervisory staff
  • Assist with the induction of new staff, training and development of care staff, efficiently co-ordinating duties of all junior staff, whilst ensuring that they are properly supported and supervised
  • Manage the evaluation of staff performance
  • Attend, and participate in training sessions and staff meetings
  • Make sure that all nursing staff comply with the NMC Code of Practice and report to the Deputy Home Manager and Home Manager any breaches of this codes
  • Maintain appropriate working relations with all colleagues at all times and be a positive role model

Health and Safety

  • Carry out all duties in a safe manner having regard to the health, safety and welfare of  all persons within Porthaven Care Homes
  • Make sure that both you and all night staff are aware of, and at all times comply with, all relevant Company policies and procedures and all relevant statutory responsibilities including Fire arrangements, Health and Safety issues including moving and handling, COSHH regulations, Infection Control, Care Quality Commission regulations, maintaining records diligently and accurately as required
  • Make sure that risk assessments pertaining to both Residents and staff are undertaken are recorded and acted upon appropriately.


Training and Development

  • Promote both the personal and professional development of all staff
  • Keep up to date with developments in clinical practice, education and training and cascade this knowledge on to all relevant staff through planned training programmes.
  • Attend and participate in, training sessions
  • Identify, plan and co-ordinate individual training plans for all staff to meet employee, Resident and company requirements and the Care Quality Commission Regulations in conjunction with the Deputy Manager and Home Manager.

Marketing

  • Effectively manage any enquiries that you take and take accurate contact details passing them in a timely manner to the Home manager.


Estate Management

  • Inspect the buildings to make sure that they are of high decorative and cleanliness standards and that there are appropriate levels of security at all times.
  • Report any issues requiring attention to the Home manager as soon as practicable

Generic Core Duties


  • Positively promote the Home through personal conduct both within and outside working hours
  • Read and understand all relevant company policies and procedures and comply with these at all times
  • Attend and participate in all training sessions and staff meetings as required
  • Any other reasonable instruction from the Deputy Manager/Home Manager, which is within your area of competence.
