Our GP Practice has an exciting opportunity for a Practice Nurse to join our friendly team. We are a 14,200 patient practice with 8 GP Partners, 1 salaried GP, 1 regular locum GP, 4 Practice Nurses 's, 2 Assistant Nurse Practitioner's and a Paramedic.

The Practice Nurse will be able to assess the nursing needs of patients. They will be expected to provide appropriate care/treatment in conjunction with the GP, or independently, as appropriate and according to Practice policy, protocol etc. The Practice Nurse will advise patients in general health care and minor ailments with referral to General Practitioners when necessary.

Responsibilities Include:

Basic Nursing Procedures


  • Dressing and wound management. Scalds and burns management. Minor injuries e.g. sprains, bruising, cuts, grazes etc. Leg ulcer care and management.
  • Suture and clip removal.
  • Management of skin disorders.
  • Recognition of mild childhood illnesses.
  • Eye toilet/Oral toilet
  • Venepuncture
  • Testing pathology samples e.g. blood, urine.
  • Ear syringing, blood pressure and weight management.
  • Aid/chaperone to GP during clinical procedures, e.g. minor operations etc.
  • Specimen collection e.g. mssu, pregnancy tests, occult blood, faeces for O&S, sputum, etc.
  • The Nurse will be responsible to putting labels on samples, form filling and ensuring timely preparation of specimens for collection to laboratory
  • General observations e.g. BP, pulse and temperature.
  • ECG - nurse responsible for recharging ecg machine.
  • Use and care of nebulisers.
  • The Practice Nurse will be responsible for upkeep and maintenance of all medical equipment and instruments, and for arranging the servicing of emergency equipment such as ECG machine, defibrillator etc.
  • Ensure the maintenance of stock levels in the Treatment Room relating to patient care.
  • Identify and target patients for chronic disease clinics as per nGMS contract requirements.
  • Organise and facilitate Nurse Led Chronic Disease Management Clinics i.e. Well-Person, Well-Woman, Asthma & COPD, Heart Disease prevention, Epilepsy, Smoking Cessation, alcohol advice, weight/diet control or any other which may be considered appropriate.
  • Liaison with other agencies as required.
  • Teaching patients self-care where appropriate.
  • To comply with the UKCC Code Of Professional Conduct and to keep your registration up to date presenting a copy of this to the Practice Manager on an annual basis.
  • To comply with the guidelines for the storage, control and administration of medicines and controlled drugs as detailed in the UKCC Administration Of Drugs.
  • To administer drugs only on signed, written medical authorisation.
  • Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the Practice Team ensuring that the relevant claim forms are submitted in a timely manner to facilitate claims for payment (childhood Immunisations etc).
  • Ensure accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded on the clinical record on the computer (or on paper records as necessary).
  • Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care, and registration with the Practice, including relevant clinic lists and call/recall systems.
  • Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports or for identifying target group patients.
  • Attend and participate in Practice Meetings as required
  • Assist in the formulation of Practice philosophy, strategy and policy.
  • To be responsible for the safe use and security of all Practice equipment used in the treatment/consulting rooms and reporting any defects to the Practice Manager/Lead GP.
  • In addition, you shall be required to comply with the requirements of the Data Protection Act in so far as the Practice is concerned.

Skills and Experience

Our preference is for an experienced nurse who can help with diabetes and chronic disease management alongside standard treatment room duties.
