R&D Technician – Food sector
Location: East Midlands
Salary: £25-34,000 + benefits
This role is in the R&D team within the Global Breakthrough Innovation team based in the East Midlands. A key focus area for this team is to drive and deliver the Global agenda for a specific food category and specifically, the incumbent will support the key Sodium Reduction project in delivering and applying an expanded practical toolbox of sodium reduction solutions for new innovation & renovation of the existing portfolio.
The successful candidate will be required to have a high degree of creative technical thinking to deliver & apply business-relevant technical unlocks, leading to in-market executions.
The role:
Support key project activities within the Sodium Reduction project in order to achieve (i) internal targets and (ii) external local and regulatory guidelines.
Execute product-led trials at kitchen, pilot and factory scale to deliver & validate ingredients and process solutions, defining optimum operating windows and scale parameters.
Support generation of compelling & creative product prototypes to illustrate technical possibilities to build business and stakeholder interest / alignment and steer development direction.
Create and apply food science insights & technology unlocks for advantaged product design (eg texture, appearance) for low-sodium products.
Coordinate scale-up activities in factories internally by liaising closely with Operations Change manager and externally with relevant third parties.
Comply with all regulatory & food safety requirements in product development, trials & consumer testing.
The person:
First Degree or equivalent in a Food Science or Chemistry-related discipline.
Previous R&D experience gained in a food or beverages organisation
Self-starter with strong self-motivation to drive for results in an innovative, inquiring and scientifically robust manner – able to deal with uncertainty and complexity
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate and negotiate effectively across all functions of the organisation
Excellent presentation skills (written & verbal)
Strong analytical skills – ability to interpret complex data and distil into useful and actionable information.
Ability to explain complex technical issues/solutions to a non-technical audience.
