PICU RN POSITON SUMMARY: Perform a full range of RN duties in accordance with assignment under the task order, including: triage; patient assessment and monitoring; use of patient monitoring and treatment equipment; appropriate nursing care, procedures, and treatments; execution of physicians' orders within the guidelines of standard nursing practice; documentation of patient care and observations; and patient education and emotional support.
SPECIFIC NMCP PICU RN CLINICAL DUTIES: The duties include but are not limited to the following:
* Render professional intensive nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients with medical and/or surgical conditions within the PICU. Continually assess condition of patients for potential or life threatening crises. Identify and address deviation from baseline vital signs, assessments and laboratory tests. Document, report and follow through on abnormal findings with physicians/ nurses.
* Recover both stable and unstable pediatric patients from general and regional anesthesia and deep sedation.
* Document all aspects of care reflective of the nursing process. Assess patients, identify problems, and formulate a plan of care based on nursing standards and protocols for the unit. Use discharge planning, nursing diagnosis and nursing judgment to formulate outcome goals based on patient and family needs.
* Interact professionally with patient/family and involve patient/family in the formation of the plan of care. Make appropriate referrals to meet short and long term goals in preparation for patient discharge.
* Consult other services as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs. Order diagnostic and therapeutic services as directed.
* Demonstrate knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and the patient's clinical condition. Administer a wide variety of rapid-acting, highly potent medications (direct intravenous and other routes) according to unit policies, procedures, and protocols. Use a broad knowledge of drugs and intravenous therapy, including properties, indications, dosages/rates and side effects. Closely monitor and document patient response, and adjust therapy accordingly.
* Be knowledgeable and observant in recognizing signs of abuse/neglect and take appropriate action following NMCP policies/guidelines.
* Demonstrate an understanding of diagnosis and treatment regimens in relation to the medical plan of care. Ensure prompt and accurate implementation of physician orders for quality outcomes.
* Provide RN coverage when warranted for medical transports to retrieve critically ill children from other health care facilities for the purpose of receiving care at NMCP.
* Operate, troubleshoot, and monitor the performance of sophisticated equipment used in the care of critically ill patients, including but not limited to: mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring equipment, cardiac monitors, etc. Interpret and respond to complex technological data generated by such equipment. Maintain passwords and access to essential equipment required to carry out nursing duties.
* Assist the privileged providers with examinations, treatments, and procedures.
* Provide emotional support or make appropriate referral for patients and significant others.
* Assess patient for emotional and social impact of illness or hospitalization.
* Assess and recognize cultural beliefs about illness and health care of ethnic groups that are significantly represented.
* Use interpersonal communication skills in order to exchange information in a clear and accurate manner with internal and external customers, volunteers, nurses, and physicians.
* Provide constructive and timely input to the supervisor on orientation appraisals of non-privileged providers and staff who provide patient care services.
* Assist in the communication of new or modified hospital policies and procedures to personnel thoroughly and promptly.
* Consult other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
* Identify needs for clinical staff development and collaborate with the supervisor in planning to meet these needs.
* Perform routine unit duties independently without specific instructions. Information is obtained from the nurse on the previous shift.
* Complete appropriate skills inventory/competency checklists and appropriate training materials in a timely manner. Provide Government with appropriate documentation upon completion.
* Keep current in continuing education programs for the improvement of patient care and maintain current nursing practice by attending seminars, programs or workshops for continuing education and by reviewing pertinent literature. Provide evidence of active participation to Government in way of training certificate, membership card, or other form of acceptable documentation.
* Participate in unit collateral duties as assigned. Maintain required clinic/unit records, patient charts, forms, logs, records, registers, census reports, and collect required statistics. Maintain crash cart. Report discrepancies to both shift Team Leader and Nursing Leadership.
* Provide clinical oversight and technical direction to assigned staff members including civilian and military professionals, paraprofessional staff, and primary nurses responsible for direct patient care.
* The primary service location will be in the PICU of the Pediatrics Department. Services may also be provided in other areas of the Pediatrics Department in response to patient population and workload.
CORE RN DUTIES: The duties include but are not limited to the following:
NOTE: A detialed position description with Core RN Duties will be provided upon coordination of initial interview.
* Education: Possess a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, a Graduate Diploma in Nursing, or an Associate Degree in Nursing, from an accredited agency such as the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
* Experience: Possess a minimum of eighteen (18) months of full-time experience as an RN working in PICU within the last twenty four (24) months.
* Licensure: Possess a current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse and advance practice nurse in one (1) of the fifty (50) states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
* Life Support Certifications: Possess the following Life Support Certifications from the American Heart Associations: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Possess and maintain Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
* Must be a U.S citizen and have the ability to pass a background check/security clearance.
STAFFING & SCHEDULING:
* Duty/Shift Hours: 1) Shifts are normally scheduled between [Click here to apply]
and 1845- 0715. 2) Each PICU RN shall work a minimum of twenty four (24) hours per month.
* Scheduling Criteria: 1) The PICU is open 365 days, twenty four (24) hours a day. Services may be required at any time. Schedules for required shifts will be provided by NMCP PICU six (6) weeks in advance. 2) Any changes to the PICU RN schedule shall be submitted seventy two (72) hours in advance of the required change. The Government recognizes the unforeseen need for scheduling changes for events such as illness or injury. The required seventy two (72) hour advance notification for roster changes may be waived by the Government for such occasions on a case-by-case basis.
* PICU RN Orientation: Each PICU RN shall undergo an orientation and shall complete mandatory Navy and Department of Defense (DOD) on-line training as required. Orientation shall be completed following each PICU RNs commencement of services. Orientation may be waived for personnel who have previously provided service at the treatment facility.
* Place of Performance: 1) The work to be performed will be in support of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA (NMCP). 2) The primary site of service shall be located in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). 3) In response to patient demand, the PICU RN may be required to work in an alternate location within the Pediatrics Department, commensurate with the PICU RNs clinical competency and training at the direction of the immediate or acting supervisor.
