Job Description

The RNOH aim is to be a world-leading neuro-musculoskeletal hospital with the best patient care and staff experience in the NHS. We are the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, one of the largest in Europe and are regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics globally. We have one the largest bone infection units in the country, and are aiming to become a national and international centre for treating rare bone diseases. Additionally we offer spinal injury rehabilitation facilities, specialist rehabilitation for long-term back pain and the largest bone tumour and spinal surgery units in the UK. As a national tertiary and quaternary centre of excellence, the RNOH treats patients from across the country, and the world, many of whom have been referred by other hospital consultants for second opinions or for treatment of complex or rare conditions.

Our teaching and clinical effectiveness are enhanced by our work in research and development and academic links with University College, London. Research departments at Stanmore include the Institute of Orthopaedics, the Centre for Disability Research and Innovation, the Institute of Human Performance and the Centre for Biomedical Engineering.

We have over 220 inpatient beds, on 9 wards, with 10 operating theatres. In our new state of the art ward block, each ward houses a dedicated pharmacy room to enable the clinical pharmacy team to work effectively and efficiently for our patients. We use innovative technology to communicate with each other and other healthcare professionals over our wide geography. Pharmacists, medicines optimisation technicians and pharmacy assistants work closely together in teams to deliver medicines optimisation by patients’ bedsides.

All clinical pharmacists also undertake project based clinical activity supplementary to their clinical activity, including bone infection services, antimicrobial stewardship, education and training (pharmacy and other clinical staff), rheumatology clinics, medicines safety, DTC, clinical trials as examples. We have clinics running in pre-assessment, long-term pain management, OPAT, rheumatology and opportunity exists for growth and development in these fields. The pharmacy team work very closely with clinicians and nurses at all grades.

We have a comprehensive programme of education and training for the pharmacy team, with internal and external speakers providing our staff with clinical expertise to match the medicines-related expertise we continue to possess and grow. Our senior clinical pharmacists are also pre-registration pharmacist tutors. We have strong links with UCL SOP, and provide training to a significant number of y3 and y4 undergraduate pharmacy students over the course of the year. We have close working relationships with sister Trusts in North Central London through the medicines optimisation and joint formulary processes as well as sharing the local faculty group with the Royal Free Hospital Pharmacy.

Opportunities exist for pharmacists to complete their postgraduate diplomas, masters, CEPIP, and utilise this skillset in a variety of clinical areas described above, as well as in our inpatient population. Some of our pharmacists are already undertaking extensive research and development in their specialities, and all staff are actively encouraged to publish where possible. Further developmental opportunities exist through leadership and management programmes, as well as through ongoing support from specialist pharmacists in a variety of clinical fields.

We are a small, friendly department, with regular social activities; we are set in picturesque grounds in North London, have access to gym and swim facilities, and currently have free parking on site! If you are a team player, willing to work hard, learn, develop and grow, we want to support and help you become the best pharmacist you can be; so get in touch and apply!
