St Andrew`s Mansfield is a centre of excellence for male service users who are presenting with learning disability or autistic spectrum disorders and who require medium or low secure care. Thoresby provides a medium secure setting for men who have learned to use challenging ways of behaving in order to cope with routine challenges in life. The ward runs as a therapeutic community and strives to ensure that the men living on the ward are involved in decision making, work alongside staff to establish care and treatment plans and participate in all aspects of running and living in an in-patient ward. Many of the men have experienced severe trauma in their lives and staff members need to work to develop a compassionate and sensitive ward culture that helps the men to develop trust. Our ultimate objective is to help the men to feel safe enough to learn new ways of behaving so that they can move towards community living.
