Job Description

We are the largest provider of NHS services across the County of Cumbria. Around 3500 staff operate 60 community and mental health services from over 20 main sites and many other premises shared with other health or community services such as GP surgeries. In any one year we see around one fifth of the population providing health care services to people in Cumbria, from newborn babies to care of the frail and elderly. Our services are organised into care groups, designed to put clinicians in control of decision making with patients and carers so that services are run by experts in the clinical area.


An opportunity has arisen to recruit a full time band 5 staff nurse to Kentmere Ward.

Kentmere is an acute mental health ward based within the Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal, Cumbria. It is an 11 bedded mixed gender ward providing services primarily to South Cumbria. The ward also provides alcohol detox facilities.

Within the role of Staff Nurse you will be responsible for the assessment of needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for those individuals admitted to the ward. You will supervise and support junior members of the team to ensure the highest possible standard of care is achieved in accordance with the policies and procedures of Cumbria Partnership Foundation Trust, the Mental Health Act and all other relevant legislation.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and motivated team player with excellent communication skills. You will have experience of working in an in-patient setting and a comprehensive understanding of mental illness and treatments. You should have the ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and have an awareness of current policy and guidance in relation to acute mental health. You will work within a supportive multidisciplinary team which works closely with community teams to support recovery.

The Trust will provide a twelve month preceptorship period for all newly registered healthcare professionals.

Healthcare Professionals returning to practice, moving into new roles or changing clinical environments, may access an agreed preceptorship period.

The Trust is committed to safeguarding adults and children therefore if the post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended) the successful candidate(s) will be subject to a criminal records check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

Standard Check: £26 + Administration cost of £4 = deduction from salary as a one off payment or over 3months at £10 a month

Enhanced Check: £44 + administration cost of £4 = deduction from salary as one off payment or £15 deduction from 1st months salary, £11 deduction from salary over following 3 months.
