Job Introduction
With over 350 hours of in-house output a year, BBC Scripted is making some of the most original, diverse and highly acclaimed television. These range from continuing drama such as Holby City, Casualty, EastEnders and Doctors, to series and serials such as Silent Witness, Luther and Our Girl to name just a few.
The Story Producer reports to the Series Producer and is accountable for the delivery of storylines on time and within the agreed editorial brief and production budget. They will be a part of producing high quality, cost-effective drama within the framework of BBC Editorial Guidelines and Corporate objectives. They conceive, generate and develop ideas and treatments of the highest standards, consistent with Scripted Department strategy. They will also encourage, foster and develop creative talent and ability on behalf of the Scripted Department

Role Responsibility
+ To produce high quality-cost effective story documents, under the leadership of the Series Producer and Executive Producer.
+ Produce clear and concise monthly story documents with sufficient detail to ensure clarity for commissioned writers and all departments within production
+ To run story conferences and meetings alongside the Series Producer.
+ To maintain good relations and communications with the Editorial Department, resolving story issues which arise post commissioning
+ To write compelling character biographies as required.
+ To keep abreast of any story changes that may occur through the scripting process.
+ To keep abreast of cast usage, holidays and rest weeks, working alongside the Scheduler.
+ To provide holiday cover for Editors where necessary
+ To oversee Shadow schemes and Academy training as well as develop some new writers
+ To ensure that on-screen content reflects the diversity of British society and that diverse groups are portrayed appropriately, in line with BBC Editorial Guidelines.
+ To be jointly accountable with other producers for the maintenance of health & safety standards throughout the production process.
+ To generate creative ideas, treatments and formats for all aspects of the production. To monitor production values and artistic standards and to balance these aspirations with costs.
+ To be aware of the full extent of the financial and purchasing authority of the post and to ensure that this authority is exercised in accordance with BBC Studios and BBC financial arrangements.
+ To be responsible for the delivery of the finished programme within all BBC editorial guidelines.

Are you the right candidate?
In order to be successful in this role, you must have:
+ Proven Scripted Drama producing experience or significant drama script editing and/or drama production experience.
+ A passion for Scripted Drama and an in-depth knowledge of Doctors is essential.
+ An ability to write clear, concise and unambiguous prose.
+ A wide ranging knowledge of television production processes, preferably gained within scripted drama, and an understanding of the jobs of programme and resource personnel engaged to complete the production.
+ An ability to inspire and encourage others, whatever their role, to champion their own ideas and views.
+ Ability to generate and transform original or unusual ideas/impulses into practical reality. Can look at existing situations and problems in novel ways and come up with innovative solutions.
+ Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people including senior editorial / management staff and talent. Confident in demanding the best from those on and off camera, but sensitive to the pressures of production and understands the necessity of adapting filming requirements during the difficult production process.
+ Knowledge of corporate conditions of service, equal opportunities and health and safety policies, editorial guidelines, contracts, and relevant trade union agreements.
+ Effective negotiating and management skills; and experience of leading and motivating teams.
+ Proven ability to influence and resolve differences in professional opinions, particularly where conflict may exist. Resilience and stamina sufficient to sustain performance when under pressure from tight schedules.
